CONAN HURRIED UP THE steps of the large stone building in the center of Ravenwood that served as the primary hospital for the city. Before a few days ago, he hadn’t set foot inside since the last official event held there despite the family contributing a significant amount to the continued operation of the building. Part of him felt shame that he had managed to distance himself so much from the everyday practices of the people, but at the same time, he didn’t live in Ravenwood all the time. If there was a place he was connected to, it was Briar’s Port. He had turned the floundering commodity into a flourishing enterprise. Now he just hoped that all his hard work didn’t cause the people who held dear like his children to feel pain.

“My lord?” the receptionist greeted, moving to stand.

He waved them back to their seat. “Is Ms. Nightshade in the same room she’s been in?”

“No, she was just downgraded to general care this morning. She is now in room three hundred and ten.”

“My thanks,” he replied, then moved toward the lift.

Despite the fact that he didn’t know Morrigan Nightshade that well since their only connection was his youngest daughter, he was relieved at the positive change in her condition. Considering the Blood Moon had been destroyed almost a week ago and the state the disaster left Morrigan in, this was magnificent progress. As Conan hit the button for the appropriate floor, he leaned against the wall of the lift and collected himself.

Even with all his preparation, he couldn’t help the wide smile as the sight of Morrigan talking to Liam and Ennan Cana, both well-known weaponsmiths and weapons masters in the city. The three of them were oblivious to his presence as they spoke in quiet tones. He could see a map of Segen laid out on Morrigan’s lap with writing on it. His mouth pulled in to form a tight line. He could tell what they were hoping to do. They wanted to find Liz as much as he did.

“My lord!” Ennan called, as though finally noticing him hovering at the door.

Conan immediately waved a hand so that Liam and especially Morrigan didn’t join Ennan in rising to attention. “I’m just checking in. I also had some good news to share. But first, how are you feeling, Ms. Nightshade?”

“I think you have earned the right to call me Morrigan, my lord. These two have mentioned to me how you’ve checked in on me every day. All in all, I can’t complain too much,” the redhead’s voice was strained from the pain of her injuries. “I’m feeling quite well, though eager to get out of here.”

Liam chuckled. “Don’t let her fool you, Lord Conan. She only woke up yesterday and is definitely in pain. They aren’t even thinking of letting her out of here any time soon. Especially on her own.”

“I have a business to run, Liam. You two might passively make money from one or two sales, but I have logistics to handle and funerals to plan.
